Areas of expertise:

Alan joined mfg Solicitors in 1974 and became a Partner in 1977. He specialises in finance and tax within the private client division.

He qualified as a solicitor more than 35 years ago and then obtained dual qualification as a chartered tax adviser some four years later.

His professional expertise extends not only to private clients, including high net worth individuals but to owner-managed businesses and the farming and agricultural community.

Over the last few years, Alan has acted on behalf of taxpayers in the high profile cases of Antrobus I (before the Special Commissioners) Antrobus II (before the Lands Tribunal) Williams (personally before the Special Commissioners) and Golding (personally before the Tax Tribunal) which concerned inheritance tax, the availability of agricultural property relief, and the meaning of agricultural value.

These are some of the most important cases in this area for many years and were instrumental in establishing when agricultural property relief will be available on agricultural land and farmhouses and what is meant by agricultural value. In particular, the recent victory for the taxpayer in Golding was crucial in preserving the relief on the farmhouse for those who farm a modest amount of land.

Alan's expertise is recognised nationally and he receives referrals from valuers, accountants and solicitors from across England and Wales. He also lectures for LawNet, the CLA and CLT

Membership of professional bodies and organisations:

He is also a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, having previously served on the Birmingham branch of that organisation and on its technical sub-committee. Before reorganisation he was clerk to the General Commissioners for Income Tax Purposes for the Kidderminster Division and is also a member of Solicitors for the Elderly, an organisation committed to providing and promoting robust, comprehensive and independent legal advice for older and vulnerable people, their family and carers.
