Free Legal Clinic in Newport
Published February 2010

People in Newport are being given the opportunity of a free chat with a lawyer.

MFG Solicitors is putting on an open day in the town on Friday February 12, the first time it has conducted such an experiment. The firm previously had an office in Newport and is looking to re-establish contact with some former clients.

And in the process it will be looking to raise funds for Severn Hospice through donations for refreshments.

Fiona Barnes, head of MFG’s private client division, said the idea was that anyone could approach the team informally.

She said: “People can be intimidated by having to make an appointment. We are trying to make it easier for them to get in contact.”

If the move is successful MFG Solicitors hopes to roll out a wider programme of events across its core area.

The venue is the Guildhall, on High Street, from 9am to 2pm.

General advice will be available across all major private client areas – for example, wills; protecting the family assets from inheritance tax, long-term care fees and means-testing of benefits; trusts and probate.

“It’s a trial,” said Mrs Barnes. “We have never done an open day like this before and we are hoping it will be a success. I am sure we will learn a lot from the outcome.”

As an incentive the firm is offering a money-off voucher to those who might wish to take advantage of its services.
