Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme Portal has opened

  • Posted

On 20th April 2020 at 8am, the Government’s anticipated Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme Portal went live, with many employers and accountants giving excellent feedback about the Portal.

HMRC have published some figures on the Scheme’s take up in the first day, and the numbers are simply staggering.

  • 185,000 firms submitted claims within the first 16 hours of the scheme opening;
  • 1.3 million employees have been reported as being furloughed as of midnight on 20th April 2020; and
  • Over £1.5 billion of grants have been applied for to cover wages of furloughed staff.

Despite differing views about the politics of how the Government are handling COVID-19, they must receive praise for the scheme itself, which has saved millions of jobs, as well as getting a brand new scheme up and running within a month.
